Easy food

We are still eating up the food out of the freezer. Life has been very busy so quick and simple meals all round. Plus the warm weather means I don't want to be standing in a hot kitchen anyway. Last night the children ate at their dad's so I was just cooking for me. I made pasta salad with mackerel. The vegtables came from the garden. The mackerel had a reduced label on it for 50p and the pasta was a little froma  30p value bag. So a very cheap meal. It was very tasty. I have some of the pasta salad left so I will have that tonight with a couple of the eggs my sister gave me.

I then followed a recipe given to me by a colleague. We made this with the children in school on our recent celebration of French Day it was delicious so I brought the recipe home. I love how simple it is to make.

It tastes delicious.

Growing in the garden

I popped up the garden today to collect some food for my lunch tomorrow. This is what I have found;

The first of the peas and the radishes, along with the prolific salad leaves and the strawberries (I got there before the birds now that they are covered with netting!)

I was so impressed that I am going to get the first of the peas- usually Stephanie snaffles all of the peas whilst playing, As she is at her dad's I thought I was safe to enjoy these in my salad tomorrow, I was so impressed with my little haul I posted a photograph on Facebook. Next thing I knew Stephanie was letting herself in the back door and snaffling them! She had been at her swimming lesson down the road and her dad showed her the photograph, she has daddy wrapped around her finger and convinced him that she needed to come and see me!

First harvest

Today we have picked our first harvest of the summer. There is also the promise of lots more to come in the garden. Let's hope so :-)

Yesterday while I had the oven on I decided to use up these bananas which are looking slightly past best.

I made 12 fairy banana cakes for my lunches. Then some plain fairy cakes for the children as they don't like banana cake.

Tonight Dylan had a friend round for tea. I forget to check what this lad does/doesn't like. He has been tea several times before. He is a good eater, not at all fussy. I dished up, called everyone to the table. As I put his plate down eh says "I've never had cooked fish before" I say oh, sorry I forgot to check, Don't eat if you don't like it. conversation continues and he clears his plate. PHEW!
I do like when friends come round and they eat 'normal' for us at least food.

Challenge for this week has been set by Stephanie. She has a party on Saturday can I make a bag before then for her friend, and can I make a bag for her teacher for the end of term present as she never has enough space in hers!
So there is my weekend challenge. I'm busy sorting data etc for work the next evening or 2. But these will be done once that is finished. With the exception of her friend's bag as that has a more imminent deadline, that will need to be done Friday evening.

Summer summer summertime!

Look at this for yummy homegrown goodness;

I got one of these after I picked them in the garden as Stephanie scoffed the rest befre I could even blink!

These were picked on the allotment, there were more ripe than this but they never made it into the bowl.

This for me os the best thing about summer :-)

all excited

I went in my garden this morning and was very impressed with what I found look;

our first ripe raspberry- Stephanie tells me it was delicious!

Chilli peppers- think they are nearly ready

And these are the first peas of our only  one of the originally planted pea plants to survive the slugs- Stephanie also assures me they were deliciousThese tiny babies will be yellow peppers when they are ripe

We went to the dentist and Stephanie opened her mouth (clamped shut last time), sat in the chair by herself and let the dentist have a thorough look in her mouth even let the dentist give her a little POLISH. Wow she is getting so grown up. Both Dylan and Stephanie have perfectly healthy teeth, so very pleased with them. To celebrate I took them to the shop to choose a toy/ book each. Stephanie choose a craft set where she designs clothes for the cardboard dolls, she loved it. Dylan choose some lego.
Whilst in the town it would have been rude not to go in the fabric shop, so I bought the zips for the long awaited dining chair cushions. Stephanie also choose some fabric for a new dress and the lovely lady in the shop showed me how to make lovely summer dresses, am going to have a try at making one for Stephanie tomorrow while she is in nursery, if it goes well I will be making one for me in the gorgeous fabric I found for me.

So you see why I am excited, lots of yummy food in my garden growing for us to eat, and some lovely fabric and a fantastically easy dress to sew- well it sounded easy when the lovely lady explained it to me.
